The UK Space Conference
27th -29th March 2008, Charterhouse School, Surrey
FREE AND REDUCED-FEE STUDENT ATTENDANCE
We are pleased to announce that the UK Space Conference will be hosted at the Charterhouse School, Surrey from the 27th – 29th March 2008 (Student Day - 29th March). There is a fully packed programme covering four parallel sessions embracing leading edge space research, engineering, astronomy, history, education and a dedicated student careers and opportunity fair!
Organised by UKSEDS, there will be a dedicated Student Day – Saturday 29th March which, for any student interested in space, is an essential event. Even if you do not know too much about the industry, come along and listen to young professionals from space companies such as VEGA, EADS Astrium and Logica - about their career progression and how they were originally offered the job. Equally invaluable will be a dedicated student networking opportunity in the form of a careers fair which will host a wide range of space organisations and universities offering space-related courses. You will get the chance to talk to representatives from these organizations as well as other space professionals during a two hour 'networking' session which includes a free lunch buffet. A full programme of events covering the entire conference (not just the student day) can be found at www.spaceconference.org.uk
Speakers include leading figures within the UK and wider space industry such as Dr. Gillian Wright (Astronomy Technology Centre – James Webb Space Telescope), Sir Martin Sweeting (CEO, Surrey Satellite Technology Limited), Alan Bond (Reaction Engines), Pat Norris (Logica) and Will Pomerantz (The X-Prize Foundation). NASA Astronaut (retired) – Major General Joe Engle, David Williams (Director General of the BNSC) and David Southwood (Director of Science at ESA)
Other events include: a Cassini Huygens Witness seminar, an open UK Space Policy discussion (chaired by Raj Sivalingam, Director, UK Space Policy & European Relations) and dedicated University sessions from the Open University, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Leicester and UCL/Mullard Space Science Observatory.
The conference will also host the Sir Arthur Clark Awards, the equivalent to the Oscars but for space! This will include a gala dinner and will represent the formal close of the conference (http://www.clarkeawards.org/). The Sir Arthur Clark awards are a star-studded occasion that provides recognition and tribute to those who have excelled in the advancement of space exploration and science. The award categories are separated into seven areas including: space entrepreneur, achievement in education, student achievement and corporate achievement, to name but a few.
With thanks to our commercial partners and sponsors, UKSEDS are able to subsidise student attendance for FREE on the student day (£10 deposit required) and £20 /day on all other days (including accomdation).
