We've all heard that the STFC has made the decision to not fund Jodrell Bank, and as the news sinks in that we could be losing this facility I have come across some shocking (in my view) information.
Now 80 million pounds is a lot of money, especially if you haven't got it, so the STFC say, but me being the cynical person that I am had doubts all along when the government decided to merge the research councils and wipe physics and astronomy of their agenda.
If you look through some of the recent government calls for the third sector (a email newsletter alert for funding currently available for not-for profit organisations) there is something like 27 million pounds being offerd as funding to encourage more volunteers for national schemes, and so on.
And also in the past week there have been a series of announcements for more STEM related fundingbut this is going directly to building more buildings and not making use of the current facilities that exist.
Here's an idea, why not use Jodrell bank as the new STEM learning centre? stupid Gordon Brown
